About the Course

The "Cyber Security for Process Control Systems" summer school has been organized by the Information Trust Institute (ITI) at the University of Illinois to complement the activities of the Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for the Power Grid (TCIP) project funded by NSF, DOE, and DHS. This summer school offering will include top academic, industrial, and government researchers as instructors and will be held at the beautiful, recently renovated Abbey Resort on Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

The summer school is intended for graduate students and others who wish to contextualize their research with an understanding of real-world control system security problems and to gain perspective on current research activities in the field. With commitments from the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, we are able to make available for this event approximately 35-40 graduate student scholarships.

The course content will include topics in the area of cyber security for process control systems that engage industry, research labs, and academia on issues of concern in the short term as well as the long term. These topics include an overview of threats, background in both control systems and cyber security, current approaches for protecting control systems, and research problems and vision.

The summer school program includes an informal work-in-progress session in which participants will give short presentations on recent results, work in progress, and other topics of interest to the cyber security for process control community. Presentations that are not purely technical in nature are welcome. We will post more details in the near future about the process for submitting abstracts for the session. The session will provide both food for thought and food for the stomach!

Registration Information

Registration fee is $850 if you register by May 10, 2008, after which the fee is $975. Your fee includes all program materials, available breaks, and meals. The program begins at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 16, 2008 and ends at 12:00 p.m., Friday, June 20, 2008. Checks or credit cards are accepted.

Graduate Scholarships

Graduate students at US institutions are eligible to apply for scholarships, which will cover the cost of registration, lodging (double occupancy; reservations will be made for you), and appropriate travel expenses. Please complete the PDF application form and email the application, with research statement, to lmelchi AT uiuc.edu or mail it to Information Trust Institute, attn: Lori Melchi, 1308 W. Main Street, Urbana, IL 61801, by Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Final decisions will be made by April 30, 2008. See the scholarship FAQ below if you have questions.

Q.1. I am unable to reach my research advisor (e.g., s/he is away on travel). How can I show that I have his/her approval?

A.1. If you are unable to reach your advisor, you can obtain the signature of any other faculty member in your department. Alternatively, you can provide contact information for your advisor (without his/her signature) for now and submit an updated application with his/her signature sometime before or during the school.

Q.2. Should my research statement focus on my current and past work or future work?

A.2. The brief research statement should cover your research interests and a summary of your current and past work (if any). You may include information about future work if you like. You are not required to have had prior research experience. If you are just starting out on your research, then include a statement of research interests and why you think you are interested in that area.

Q.3. Is it important that I have prior experience in control systems?

A.3. The summer school includes introductory material in control systems; therefore, it is not necessary to have prior experience in control systems. Graduate students enrolled in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science programs will be able to follow the lectures based on undergraduate course work.

Due to the tremendous response to the Summer School, the conference hotel is sold out. Three area resorts (listed below) within 8 miles of the Abbey have some rooms available, as of our latest notice. Space is extremely limited, so please make your reservations right away.

The Abbey Resort has offered to provide transportation for our event participants who are staying at alternative hotels. Upon your arrival, you should contact the Bellman at the Abbey Resort to make arrangements for your transportation. The Bellman can be reached by calling the main Abbey number (800-709-1323) and asking for the Bellman.
