ITI's 2007 Undergraduate Research Internship Program Underway
The University of Illinois Information Trust Institute's inaugural summer Undergraduate Research Internship program is now underway, under the leadership of Prof. Carl Gunter.
40 applications were received from undergraduate students around the world. The 18 students selected are participating in 8- to 10-week research projects at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Washington State University, supervised by ITI researchers in a number of information trust research areas. The awards, which are supported by state and federal funds, include intern stipends and, in some cases, an allocation for travel expenses. Faculty and senior researchers from the UI departments of Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering, as well as the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, are participating this year.
Below is a list of the successful applicants and their faculty mentors. Congratulations to the selected students!
- Suhas Aggarwal of IIT, Guwahati, will work with Prof. Carl Gunter on the substation automation project within ITI's Trustworthy Cyber Infrastructure for Power (TCIP) Center.
- David Albrecht of UIUC will work with Prof. Nikita Borisov on vulnerabilities in network software and writing vulnerability descriptions.
- David Anderson of Washington State University (WSU) will work with Prof. David Bakken of WSU on the WSU portion of ITI's TCIP testbed configuration and support.
- David Bergman of UIUC will work with Prof. David Nicol on integrating RINSE simulation software into the Trusted ILLIAC testbed.
- Tamal Das of IIT, Delhi, will work with Dr. Himanshu Khurana on the design, setup, and security evaluation of the TCIP testbed.
- Milos Gligoric of the University of Belgrade will work with Prof. Darko Marinov on software testing and model checking.
- Luke Gotszling of UIUC will work with Prof. Tamer Basar on designing a system that will utilize neural or Bayesian network techniques, supplementing the rule-based systems currently in use for deciding which traffic is allowed.
- Priyank Gupta of IIT, Delhi, will work with Prof. Marianne Winslett on a project aimed at enhancing the flexibility and security of the Disaster Management Interoperability Services (DMIS) software package.
- Tihomir Gvero of the University of Belgrade will work with Prof. Darko Marinov on software testing and model checking.
- Mujtaba Hasan of IIT, Delhi will work with Prof. Cedric Langbort on modeling, analysis, and control of multiplayer online games.
- Loren Hoffman of WSU will work with Prof. Dave Bakken of WSU on refactoring GridStat code for portability and usability by other TCIP projects, and document the processes by which GridStat is built and configured.
- Julie Honcharevic of UIUC will work with Prof. Tim Bretl on the design and implementation of brain-machine interfaces for control of trusted semi-autonomous robotic systems.
- Aditya Khanna of IIT, Delhi, will work with Adam Slagell on expanding the power and usability of FLAIM, the flagship software of the LAIM working group at NCSA.
- Billy Lau of UIUC will work with Prof. Vikram Adve on porting the MacOS kernel (Darwin) to the Secure Virtual Architecture.
- Raoul Rivas of UIUC will work with Prof. Klara Nahrstedt on supporting integration of power-aware wireless systems into the TCIP testbed.
- Nathan Schubkegel of WSU will work with Prof. Dave Bakken of WSU on developing a new GridStat visualization system and new GridStat demonstration applications within ITI's TCIP Center.
- Arshdeep Singh of IIT, Delhi will work with Prof. Todd Coleman on developing statistical signal processing methodologies for some security applications.
- Yunfan "Andy" Ying of UIUC will work with Prof. Sam King on building a functional simulator capable of booting an operating system, to be used for security research.
